Chapter XXI

"You're lying."

"Not today, surprisingly."

"But why?"

"Easy." She sighed after a long pause, your response not to be heard. "Marriage."

"World domination?"

"In a sense. If I rule the government, I rule everything."

"How long ago...?"

"Did I plan this? Before I was even hired by that old man."

You stare in astonishment.

Marianne took this as a chance to continue.

"I wanted to control everything. That way, nobody could boss me around, or call me worthless or unwanted. Nobody listens to you unless you're one of the 'uppers'."

Your eyes lower in sadness. You used to experience these things with your father.

"The only way to get that power was to have a place in this wretched society. That meant getting under James' skin, so I can become Queen."

"But you couldn't have if he was still married to my mother."

"Good, you catch on. That saves me alot." She spun his pistol around her index finger. "That 'incurable' disease Anastasia had was just a little poison I whipped up."

"A little?"

"Oops. I guess I poured too much in her drink." She laughed. "Well, it's not my problem."

"You killed the Queen! And on purpose!" You exploded. "That's-"

"Disloyalty to the government?" She sucked her teeth. "As if that's anything new."

"You got innocent people caught up in your stupid affair!"

"Simple mistake." She said casually.

She looked around. "Lucky me, your friend isn't here."

Your raging emotions died.

You had to leave.

The building shook violently again.

"Marianne, the building's going to fall in!"

"Good. I'll make sure you stay to see it." Her pistol made a clicking noise.

You spun around and ran for your life.

"Oh, [Name]? Where did you go?" She called. "Don't you want to see your mother again?" She began laughing hysterically and simultaneously shooting in random directions.

You kept running, the shaking intensifying with every step. You couldn't call out for Anneliese-Marianne would hear you and follow your voice.

"Come back, [Name]! I don't want you to get hurt!" She laughs even harder. You heard heels click along the floor behind you.

You manage to run down another set of stairs. As you no longer heard her voice nor her feet, you slowed down and observed your surroundings. There were a few dazed people wandering around amidst the smoke and flames.

The burned paintings on the chapped wall became familiar. "I'm on the 7th floor."

Immediately, the whole floor vibrates. The force throws you down to the floor, and you scream for help in vain, as other people's own drowns yours out. The ceiling begins cracking; chunks of the painted and heavily designed ceiling dropping below on people and onto the floor, making huge holes.

Within seconds, the 7th floor caves in, and screams are now covered up by the debris.

There's no point in trying to run. The exit is too far.

Hanging on to nothing but a thread of hope, you put your head down, covering your eyes, mouth, and nose with your hands.

You instantly black out.

                                                                                            ---------------
"I'm sorry, Princess [Name]. But we can't seem to do anything about your mother's sickness."

"Oh, mother...please...don't..."

........................

"[Name], why are you crying?"

"Mother, you're awake!"

"Barely."

"Mother, stop talking. You're coughing violently."

"No need to worry about me, [Name]. I know when my time is coming."

"But mother, you're so young!"

"Don't cry, [Name]. Life isn't fair for anyone, no matter who you are."

"Mom, no!"

"Shh. Tomorrow is your birthday, isn't it? It's a shame I won't get to see you turn 18."

"Don't say that at all, mom. You'll live!"

"False hope is a crime, [Name]."

"Mom!"

"Stop crying, [Name]."

"How can I? I'll never see you again!"

"That's what you think."

"...[N-Name]. Happy Birthday, sweetie."

"No...Mother!"

"I love you so much, sweetheart. Can you promise me something?"

"Anything, Mother. Anything!"

"My heartbeat is slowing."

"Mom!"

"Mom, don't leave me! Mom!"

"Nobody knows when they will die. That's why we always live in fear."

"Mom!"

"Sh. [Name], you were always so lively. You always managed to bring joy to my heart, even when I was in pain."

"Stop, mother!"

"I just want you to know that I'll always be with you. In your heart."

"Can't you doctors do anything to save her!?"

"We tried all we could, Princess [Name]. We're terribly sorry."

"[Name], look at me."

"Mom, you're eyes are drooping. Mom!!"

"Live on, [Name]."

"For me."

"Wake the hell up, brat."

Your eyes snapped open. Tears immediately began running down your cheeks.

"Levi...?"

"Tch. I should've come sooner."

"You're...here? Am I dreaming?"

"No, you idiot." He had the same annoyed look in his eyes.

"It really is you!" You clamp your arms around his body and cry into him.

"I'm so glad you're here! I thought that I...that I wouldn't see you again!"

"Stop crying. You're soaking my uniform with your damn tears."

You let go of Levi, caring not about your heated cheeks. "You're wearing your uniform."

"I always did. Are you that unobservant?"

You nod sadly.

He sighs. "Where's the blonde girl?"

"I don't know." You reply in a small voice. "She said she was going to do her job, and I never saw her again." Your tiny voice cracked as you finished your sentence.

"Don't start crying again." He pulls out a handkerchief. You politely take the soft cotton tissue and silently dab your moist eyes.

After making sure you were taken care off, Levi looks around at what was the 7th floor. Severed body limbs stuck out from the ruins, and the fire had been blown out. There was still smoke in the air, and it was pitch black, with the exception of the moonlight.

"I think you partied too hard."

You held in your laugh. "This wasn't a party."

He looked at you curiously.

"Marianne did all of this. With the help of the Military Police."

His eyes widened a little.

"Didn't you see anybody when you came in?" You asked.

"Of course I did."

"So then, why are you-"

"Alive? They may be corrupt and stupid, But they know their place."

You sniff. "I'm glad you're okay, at least."

"The Survey Corps is here."

"Really?"

He nods. "They'll probably take care of outside. The idiots who turned their backs on humanity count as threats."

He unsheathed his swords. "If they're going to act like Titans, we'll simply treat them like Titans."

"You're going to kill them?"

"If I have to." He walks away.

You get up to follow, but you suddenly fall back down.

"Levi, I can't walk."

He stops and looks back at you.

After he completed his judgmental staring, he walked over, turned around, and crouched down in front of you.

"Get on." He grumbled.

"Are you sure?"

"Do you want to stay here alone?"

Not wanting to be left behind, you climb onto his back. He wraps his arms securely around your thighs.

"This is embarrassing." You muttered.

"Then start walking."

"But I can't."

"That's what I thought."

You obediently let Levi carry you down some stairs, and through some hallways. Most of the stairs were deteriorated, so it would be dangerous to climb down. Because of this, you met some hallways you never seen before-either because you truly haven't, or the debris made it look totally different.

"I told father I was sorry." You say, breaking the comfortable silence.

"What did he say?"

"He said it was in the past now, and that I could finally marry since I've returned."

Levi flinched.

"But Marianne killed my ex-fiancé." You finished.

You felt Levi's shoulders ease.

"Levi, do you think Anneliese is dead?"

"Do you think so?"

"I don't want to."

"Then she probably isn't."

The building shook violently again, but Levi continued.

"The castle is going to collapse." Levi stated plainly.

"I've heard that far too many times tonight."

Levi hummed.

"Marianne killed my father too."

Levi almost tripped over a corpse.

"Fate is cruel." You say.

"It's just a horrible reality."

"She killed him and my mother."

Levi stayed silent.

"You're probably right, then."

Levi carries you down 3 more flights. If you're correct, you were probably on the 4th floor.

"Levi. I'm tired."

"You were crushed by a ceiling. Go to sleep."

"On you?"

"Do you see a bed around here?"

Hesitantly, you rest your head on Levi's shoulder. He didn't seem to mind the slightest.

"Are we going to make it out alive?"

"That depends."

"On what?"

The building shook again. More blood curdling screams were heard in the distance.

"On how long the building can last."
